Since the beginning of the year, several measures related to nuclear arms control, disarmament, and non-proliferation have (re)gained traction. New START, the treaty limiting the number of deployed strategic warheads and strategic delivery systems between Russia and the United States, was extended; the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) came into force; and diplomatic talks on the JCPOA, the so-called Iran nuclear deal that aims to prevent Iran’s nuclear proliferation, are taking place in Vienna. While these and other related initiatives each have different (immediate) purposes, they are all interlinked and vital to ensuring our common future. The recent developments provide an opportunity not only to assess the state of play in nuclear arms control, disarmament, and non-proliferation, but also how each of them is likely to evolve.
