The outcome of the German parliamentary elections on February 23 will be highly consequential for Germany both in terms of finding a pathway forward domestically, after suffering two years of recession in a row, but also in terms of its foreign policy. Whether it comes to taking up leadership roles within the EU or NATO, supporting Ukraine, or forging close links with France and Poland, the outgoing Scholz government is leaving a decidedly mixed record. Will Germany’s next government be able to improve on it?
