On June 3, the UN Security Council unanimously decided to establish the UN Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan (UNITAMS). This peace operation has a broad remit to support Sudan’s transition process in the areas of democratic governance, the peace process, peacebuilding, and economic development. A result of intense negotiations led by co-penholders Germany and the UK, the mission – which includes potentially innovative approaches such as unarmed civilian protection and the integration of development, humanitarian, and peacebuilding concerns – accompanies and follows the planned withdrawal of the AU/UN hybrid operation in Darfur (UNAMID).
In the Web Talk, we will discuss expectations for UNITAMS’ operationalization, the lessons learned from UNAMID for its implementation, and the dynamics in the UN Security Council and in Sudan that led to its creation.
