Securitization in Russia –

Session of the Russia/Eastern Partnership Discussion Group.

The return of Vladimir Putin in 2012 intensified the securitization of Russian politics. The shrinking circle around Putin consists mainly of former servants of the Soviet security service – like the President himself –, observing domestic and international politics mainly through the lens of security threats. We would like to discuss how this perception is becoming Russian policies’ main driver, with direct consequences for the EU, and focus on ideology and elites, the security doctrine, and changes in Russian foreign policy.
