Ensuring resilience for Europe’s energy infrastructure

Europe is underestimating a strategic shift in modern warfare: the intentional targeting of critical infrastructure. Russia has targeted Ukrainian civilian and critical infrastructure for years, but such energy systems have become central in the Iran War. Energy infrastructure is a particular focus: Strikes on gas and oil facilities illustrate how quickly economies can be destabilized by disrupting power grids, industrial production, and civilian supply. The resilience of critical infrastructure must move to the center of Germany’s and Europe’s defense and security agenda.

Prospects for Building an Energy Union and the Sanctions against Russia Dominate Discussions about the EU’s Energy Security

While political and public concerns about the reliability of Russian gas supplies have been driving the debate about the EU’s energy security for several years, the conflict in Ukraine and the European Commission’s proposal to establish an energy union have furthered it significantly. In order to discuss the latest developments, the DGAP and the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom invited a panel of experts to assess the EU’s current energy security prospects.

Ausgelöst durch Schwankungen im globalen Öl- und Gasmarkt und den Ukrainekonflikt zwingen die Turbulenzen auf dem europäischen Energiemarkt die politischen und wirtschaftlichen Akteure zu neuen Kooperationsformaten. Aus diesem Grund veranstaltete der Valdai Discussion Club eine Konferenz in Kooperation mit der DGAP, auf welcher ein neues Modell der Energiesicherheit für Europa und Eurasien und eine neue russische Energiestrategie für Europa diskutiert wurden.
