This week, as German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and cabinet members travel to New Delhi for the seventh Indian-German government consultations, we look at Indo-German relations and India’s international role. According to “Focus on India”, a government strategy paper presented on October 16, the world’s most populous country is a key partner for Germany in terms of trade, climate policy, and security cooperation. The paper also highlights the role of skilled workers from India for the German labor market. Yet, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government has been criticized for its stance on Russia, purchasing Russian oil, and undermining international sanctions. Against this background, we assess how India can best be a strategic partner for Germany and Europe.
