Short Bio

Jan Stöckmann is head of DGAP’s Karl Kaiser Forum on strategic questions. He also runs the Morning Briefing series and the events related to DGAP’s 70th anniversary in 2025.

Until 2025, Stöckmann was head of the directors’ office at DGAP.  Before joining DGAP in January 2023, he was a postdoc in modern history at Helmut-Schmidt-Universität in Hamburg. He held a research fellowship at Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB) that was sponsored by the Wiener-Anspach Foundation and another in Yale University’s International Security Studies. His research covers various aspects of 20th century international history, especially the changing nature of diplomacy and international organizations. His book, The Architects of International Relations, was published in 2022 by Cambridge University Press.

Stöckmann earned his doctorate at the University of Oxford, a dual master’s degree in international and world history from Columbia University and the London School of Economics, and a bachelor’s in philosophy and economics from the University of Bayreuth.
