The UK Government and Its Post-Election Approach to Brexit
Shortly before the Brexit referendum’s first anniversary, negotiations got underway in Brussels on June 19 to facilitate the United Kingdom’s departure from the European Union. Eleven days earlier, the Conservative government of Prime Minister Theresa May had lost its parliamentary majority in a snap election, weakening her mandate considerably. How will the unstable political situation inform London’s approach to the Brexit negotiations? What does the election’s outcome say about the wishes of the UK electorate? Has the election made a “softer” Brexit – i.e. the UK staying in the single market or the EEA/customs union – more likely or more unlikely?
