RUSSIA’S INVASION OF UKRAINE: WEEK Fifteen

While the battle for complete control of Luhansk, a region in northeast Ukraine, is intensifying, Moscow has taken further steps toward consolidating its hold on more Ukrainian territory in the country’s south. Meanwhile, Russia’s blockade of Ukrainian sea ports continues to disrupt the flow of grain exports and threatens food security in the Middle East and Africa. To remedy that, several efforts are underway to allow Ukraine to export its foodstuffs via rail and ships, including through Germany.

In addition to assessing the military situation on the ground, this week’s briefing will focus on what the economic sanctions on Russia have achieved so far and the options the Kremlin has to retaliate. We will also discuss the measures that are still available to mitigate the looming food crisis.

Dr. habil. Linde Götz Deputy Head, Department Agricultural Markets, Leibniz Institute of Agricultural Development in Transition Economies (IAMO)
