Since French President Emmanuel Macron fended off the political right and won a second term, he and his party, La République en Marche, have been busy preparing for legislative elections in June. While polls suggest that the current government has a good chance of retaining its majority in the National Assembly, heated domestic debates and the geopolitical context might push the campaign in an unexpected direction.

The upcoming legislative elections are a bellwether. Will Macron’s appointment of a new prime minister succeed in setting the tone for the coming five years? After falling short in the presidential elections, will the political left stage a comeback and check Macron’s power in his second mandate?
