Round Table Discussion

With the annexation of the Crimea, and despite Russia’s serious economic downturn, President Vladimir Putin enjoys approval ratings of up to 80 percent – his highest scores in 18 months. In a political system devoid of democratic competition, where the political opposition is on the sidelines and all relevant media are state controlled, opinion polls are crucial to understanding the prevailing mood in society. How important are opinion polls for Russian political decision makers? How credible are they? Are they simply political instruments?
