This week, we will assess conditions in Nagorno-Karabakh after Azerbaijan recently took control of the region by force. While Azeri authorities claim to respect the rights of the local Armenian population, targeted intimidation on the ground is being reported. We will focus on the humanitarian situation and what the forced outflow of Armenians from the disputed region means for the Armenian state. Further, we will explore Azerbaijan’s current perspective and whether it sees further military escalation regarding its exclave Nakhichevan as an option. Given the limited response from Russia, the EU, and the United States to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, we will also discuss the larger geopolitical implications for the region and Europe’s role there.
