Policy Project: How to get the implementation of the AI Act right?

In 2024, the EU adopted the EU Artificial Intelligence Act to regulate Artificial Intelligence across all sectors. The act is a humble step forward towards protecting people’s fundamental rights risks stemming from AI. The attention now lies on the implementation of the AI Act as this phase will determine the efficacy of the law's enforcement mechanisms.
This project focuses on the AI Act implementation process and engages with stakeholders actively involved in it – especially on the German national level. While the EU is tasked to develop compliance standards for the Act, especially on the national level there’s potential to strengthen some of the weak provisions that made it into the Act.
However, central challenges persist: e.g. establishing an oversight ecosystem that meaningfully involves data protection agencies, equality bodies and others to address fundamental rights risks of AI and succesfully leveraging the potential to strengthen some of these weaker provisions.
