Policy Project: Promoting Clean Energy in Central Asia: German Companies' Role and Best Practices

Bild

The Russian war against Ukraine and its consequences have focused attention on Kazakhstan as the economically strongest Central Asian country. Kazakhstan has since positioned itself as a potential alternative supplier of energy and raw materials, an important hub between Europe and Asia, and a major geopolitical player.
Kazakhstan is increasingly relying on German technology to modernise and decarbonise its industries, including the agricultural and energy sectors. With its abundant resources and low energy costs, Kazakhstan is seeking to attract manufacturing companies to locate in the country.
This provides an opportunity for strategic cooperation between German companies and Kazakhstan to promote effective technology transfer, exchange of expertise and implementation of best practices to support the clean energy transition in the region. Such cooperation would bring benefits to both German companies and the Central Asian region.
In this context, I would like to identify strategies and measures that can promote the green transformation and facilitate the reduction of the carbon footprint in both Kazakhstan and Germany. Specifically, I will analyse how the strategic engagement of German companies in the field of energy transition in Central Asia can facilitate effective technology transfer, exchange of expertise and implementation of best practices to support the clean energy transition in the region.
