Morning Briefing 06.01.2025

Speakers:
Karl-Heinz Kamp, Associate Fellow, Center for Order and Governance in Eastern Europe, Russia, and Central Asia, DGAP
Barbara Kunz, Senior Researcher and Director of the European Security Programme, Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI)

Chair: Jan Stöckmann, Head of the Director’s Office, DGAP

Every Thursday morning, DGAP’s Research Institute brings together experts and high-level guests to discuss the latest developments in foreign affairs. This week’s topic is nuclear deterrence in Europe, including a look at the reforms proposed in a new paper by Karl-Heinz Kamp – which is available in both English and German. With nuclear deterrence back at the center of global security debates, NATO faces mounting pressure to adapt in an era where authoritarian regimes actively leverage nuclear capabilities. We will discuss if the alliance's current posture is sufficient, or if deterrence requires bold new steps – such as expanding nuclear deployments in Europe. Together with two leading experts, we will talk about NATO’s nuclear strategy, the impact of Trump’s return to power, and the need to update the alliance’s 2012 doctrine ahead of the 2025 NATO Summit, scheduled for the end of June in The Hague.
