Every Thursday morning at 8:30, DGAP’s Research Institute brings together experts and high-level guests to discuss the latest developments in geopolitics. This week’s session will focus on the current political configuration of Central Europe given the Czech Republic’s new president who assumed office last week. Petr Pavel’s landslide victory has been widely seen as a blow to the powerful populist trend in that region – a trend that will be tested in parliamentary elections in Slovakia and Poland later this year. We will also discuss a growing rift in the Visegrád Group where the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Poland are clashing with Viktor Orbán’s Hungary on Russia’s war in Ukraine. To what extent do these developments in Central Europe present an opportunity – or a challenge – for Germany to reengage with its eastern neighbors and partners?
