Every Thursday morning at 8:30, DGAP’s Research Institute brings together experts and high-level guests to discuss the latest developments in geopolitics. This week, our experts will assess the situation in the Western Balkans in the context of Russia’s war in Ukraine, the Western Balkans Summit in Berlin on November 3, and the EU-Western Balkans Summit in Tirana on December 6. Although German Chancellor Olaf Scholz sees EU integration of the six Balkan countries as a priority, EU divisions over internal reforms as well as Russian interference, democratic backsliding, and deepening inter-ethnic tensions in the region seem to make this goal ever more elusive. What is Berlin doing to reverse these trends? How are the Balkan governments using the new dynamics around Ukraine’s candidate status to advance their own, more advanced EU accession bids? And does the EU still have enough incentives to revive its enlargement process and connectivity agenda in this part of Europe?
