Key Visual of the EPC-DGAP cooperation on the German EU Presidency

Germany will take over the EU Council Presidency on July 1, 2020, in the midst of the most extraordinary public health crisis in modern times. Despite the severe tests that the economic, social, and political consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic pose to the EU’s cohesion and capacity to act, expectations are high. Germany is under pressure to make its “corona presidency” a success and lay the groundwork for the EU to emerge from this crisis stronger and more united.

During this online event, we assess Germany’s leadership and responsibility as it takes over the EU Council Presidency in this crucial period for the EU. We discuss how the COVID-19 pandemic will impact priorities and whether, in these extraordinary times, Berlin will be able to push forward a meaningful economic and social response, uphold European values and the rule of law, and strengthen the EU’s international role.

Speakers:

Michael Roth, MP
Minister of State for Europe, German Federal Foreign Office, Berlin

Daniela Schwarzer
Director, German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP), Berlin

Janis Emmanouilidis
Director of Studies, European Policy Centre (EPC), Brussels

Moderated by:

Jacki DavisMeade Davis Communications, Brussels

This event is part of the joint EPC-DGAP event series ‘Project Presidency’ looking at the role of Germany and the future of the EU in the framework of the German EU Council Presidency, and aimed at connecting the EU policy debate in Berlin and Brussels. To this end, we are delighted to welcome a DGAP and EPC audience to this event.
