The participants of the latest Franco-German Future Dialogue’s workshop opted for an overall scenario in which the UK were to remain an EU member. Under the umbrella of the “Visioning” approach, they defined the following topics as key and formed working groups on them: democracy; membership; the Common Foreign and Security Policy; finance and economy; social cohesion; and sustainability and mobility. Possible aims for each area were then defined in newspaper headlines such as “EU citizens can vote wherever they live in the EU” and followed up by using the “Road Mapping” method, defining concrete steps that would need to be taken in order to achieve these objectives.

The workshop report contains a more detailed description of the workshop’s methods and results; it is available for download in English and German at the bottom of this article.

The workshop report was compiled within the framework of the Franco-German Future Dialogue, a program for young Franco-German leaders established in 2007 by the Study Committee for Franco-German relations (Cerfa) of the French Institute of International Relations (Ifri), and the German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP), in cooperation with and with generous support from the Robert Bosch Foundation.

The Franco-German Future Dialogue opened its doors to other EU member states for the first time in 2014 – first to Italy, then to the United Kingdom in 2015. The goal is to associate future decision makers from other countries with Franco-German exchanges on current European questions.
