Joint discussion by the German Council on Foreign Relation, Forum NRW/Bonn, in cooperation with the Center for International Security and Governance.

As a policy guideline, the American National Security Strategy not only outlines the major strategic priorities of the U.S. in the domains of defense and foreign affairs, but also offers important insights into America’s relations with the world. In light of the Trump administration’s at times erratic and highly confrontational conduct of foreign and security policy, the new security strategy may shed some light on the underlying tensions within the Republican administration, on the future direction of a U.S. foreign policy caught between Trumpian isolationism and pressures for international engagement, and on the prospective evolution of America’s relationship with its global partners.

Speakers:

Prof. Dr. Charles Kupchan
Professor of International Affairs, Georgetown University and former director for European Affairs at the National Security Council

Jan Techau
Senior fellow and director of the Europe Program German Marshall Fund of the United States
