The Environmental Work of Indigenous Peoples in the Sahel –

Feminist Foreign Policy in the Context of the Climate Crisis:

A Conversation with Hindou Oumarou Ibrahim

Monday, May 15, 2023, 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. (CEST)

via Zoom

On December 19, 2022, the UN Biodiversity Conference (COP15) ended with the adoption of two key measures: a global biodiversity framework that intends to address the key drivers of nature loss and a plan that safeguards the rights of indigenous peoples and recognizes their contributions to the protection of global biodiversity.

Against this background, we are honored to host a discussion with one of the framework’s negotiators, renowned Chadian environmentalist Hindou Oumarou Ibrahim. With her, we will explore how the rights of indigenous peoples can be respected and accounted for when crafting global climate policy.

Hindou Oumarou Ibrahim is an expert on the adaptation and mitigation of indigenous peoples to climate change. She advocates for the greater inclusion of their knowledge and traditions in the global movement to fight its effects. A member of the Mbororo pastoralist community, she is President of the Association for Indigenous Women and Peoples of Chad (AFPAT) and Conservation International’s Lui-Walton Senior Indigenous Fellow.

Oumarou Ibrahim also serves as a member of the United Nations Permanent Forum for Indigenous Issues, the Indigenous Peoples of Africa Coordinating Committee (IPACC), and the Advisory Committee to the Secretary-General’s 2019 Climate Action Summit. In 2019, she was listed by Time as one of 15 women championing action on climate change.

This event is the fifth in the series “Feminist Foreign Policy – An Intersectional Perspective” which is jointly convened by Diplomats of Color, women@diplo, and Young DGAP. The series aims to shed light on different approaches to and perspectives on feminist foreign policy with international experts. In particular, it focuses on context-specific questions of Feminist Foreign Policy (FFP) in the Global South. Are you interested in joining the series or moderating a discussion? Then please get in touch!
