CANCELED

The German Council on Foreign Relations’ Young DGAP, together with Diplomats of Color and frauen@diplo, cordially invites you to the fourth edition of the thematic series “Feminist Foreign Policy – An Intersectional Perspective”:

Sudan After the 2019 Revolution – Feminist Foreign Policy in the Context of Crises and the Role of Media:

A conversation with Omnia Shawkat

Tuesday, April 18, 2023, 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. (CEST)

via Zoom

The protest movement that ousted dictator Omar al-Bashir from Sudan in April 2019 ended three decades of totalitarian rule – a historic accomplishment. Women of all ages and backgrounds were on the front lines of the peaceful demonstrations for a democratic transition with greater social justice and respect for human rights. In her article “Sudanese Women at the Heart of the Revolution” Omnia Shawkat argued that women played such a dominant role because they were reacting to the government’s deliberate limiting of women’s agency. Indeed, during the transition government, there was progress on women’s rights. In October 2021, however, the military and General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan took power in a coup. When they dissolved the transition government, important achievements for Sudanese women were largely reversed. Today, almost 50 percent of women in Sudan are illiterate. Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and domestic violence are legitimized. Laws such as the Public Order Act give Sudanese police the freedom to arrest, fine, beat, and jail women for “dressing inappropriately.” Despite the setbacks, hardships, and frustration, Sudanese women continue to advocate for their rights, safety, and participation.

This event is the fourth in the series “Feminist Foreign Policy – An Intersectional Perspective,” which is jointly convened by Diplomats of Color, women@diplo, and Young DGAP. The series aims to shed light on different approaches to and perspectives on feminist foreign policy with international experts. In particular, it focuses on context-specific questions of Feminist Foreign Policy (FFP) in the Global South. Are you interested in joining the series or moderating a discussion?
