DGAP’s Research Institute regularly brings together experts and high-level guests to discuss the latest developments in foreign affairs. On Thursday, September 17, we will look at the recent BRICS Summit, held from September 11 to13, and the upcoming high-level week of the United Nations General Assembly, held from September 18 to 28. These two events offer an opportunity to discuss some of the most pressing issues of global governance. There are ongoing conflicts and crises waiting to be addressed in New York, including in the Middle East, Ukraine, and Sudan. Yet, at the same time, the UN system faces institutional and financial challenges as well as the difficult search for a new Secretary General to succeed Antonio Guterres. Unsurprisingly, BRICS states are pushing for change, including in the UN Security Council. In short: the world’s problems will be pressed into a few days of top-level international diplomacy.
