DGAP’s Research Institute regularly brings together experts and high-level guests to discuss the latest developments in foreign affairs. On April 14, we will discuss the results and implications of what are considered to be the most important elections in the EU this year: the Hungarian parliamentary elections on April 12. Their outcome will shape European policy on Ukraine and Russia as well as many other issues that Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has been blocking in recent years. Recent polling shows Orbán’s Fidesz trailing more than 10 percentage points behind Péter Magyar’s Tisza in a campaign that focused on corruption and economic discontent as well as foreign policy. Thus, the outcome will also send signals to other European populists who have endorsed Orbán and could show how democratic backsliding might be reversed.
