Université Paris Sciences et Lettres (PSL) and Director of the Middle East and Mediterranean Chair at PSL, Ecole Normale Supérieure

In his newest book, Chaos, renowned French sociologist Gilles Kepel gives a detailed account of crises in North Africa and the Middle East since 1973 – Islamism and Jihadism; societal tension in Lebanon, Iran, and Iraq; civil wars in Syria, Yemen, and Libya; diverse outcomes of the Arab Spring in Tunisia and Egypt; the rivalry between Saudi Arabia and Iran. The book, which was recently published in German, is the product of more than 40 years of research on changing political, religious, economic, and social dynamics.

One of the foremost researchers on the region, Kepel sees the current situation in the Middle East at a turning point, comparing it to the one in Europe in 1914. After a reading from the book and a commentary by Sofia Koller, we will discuss the consequences of this view for Europe today.
