After Sri Lanka’s surprisingly democratic election and peaceful transition, Maithripala Sirisena was sworn in as president on January 9, 2015. He appointed opposition leader Ranil Wickremesinghe as prime minister and Kanagasabapathy Sripavan, a member of the Tamil minority, as chief justice of Sri Lanka’s Supreme Court. His new government has taken several measures to reduce presidential power and establish good governance principles, rule of law, transparency, national reconciliation and a balanced foreign policy. Minister of Foreign Affairs Mangala Samaraweera will detail the steps taken by the new government to lead Sri Lanka into a new era.
