Short Bio
Nikolai von Schoepff has been a senior fellow at DGAP since September 2022. He was previously German ambassador to Latvia, Cyprus, and the United Arab Emirates.
Von Schoepff began his career as a research associate at the Committee on Eastern European Economic Relations. In 1991, he joined Germany’s Federal Foreign Office. In this context, he worked for the Federal Chancellery and as head of the legal and consular section of the German Embassy in Kiev. He has also worked in the political section of the Permanent Mission of Germany in New York, as the head of the economic service of the German Embassy in Bucharest, and as the head of the political department of the German Embassy in Moscow. Furthermore, he has held various leadership positions in EU policy, arms control, and foreign trade.
Von Schoepff studied history and economic studies at Ludwig-Maximilian-Universität München (LMU), in Moscow, and at the London School of Economics (LSE), Freie Universität Berlin, and St. Antony’s College at the University of Oxford.
