German Eastern Policy

Is a partnership with Poland possible?

Russia remains the linchpin of Germany’s Eastern policy – despite statements to the contrary from the federal government. This orientation toward Russia influences Germany’s relations with other post-Soviet states and weakens alternative approaches such as the EU’s Eastern Partnership. In order for EU Neighborhood Policy to be successful in Eastern Europe, there needs to be a stronger disconnect between Germany’s Russia policy and its policies toward the eastern neighbor states.
