Sergej Markedonow forscht zu ethnopolitischen Konflikten im postsowjetischen Raum, insbesondere im Kaukasus. Er ist Privatdozent an der Russischen Staatlichen Geisteswissenschaftlichen Universität in Moskau und Experte am Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC). Im September 2016 war er Visiting Fellow im Robert Bosch-Zentrum der DGAP.
