Russia and Belarus have both seen public anger at the direction that their governments have taken. There are similarities between the two countries: a desire for political change by the middle class, retrograde responses by the authorities, the nature and modus operandi of the opposition and the apolitical peripheries. But the countries differ in their levels of openness, economic opportunities and elite structure.

This event will compare the protest dynamic and the opportunities for change in Russia and Belarus and explore the role that public pressure on the elites is likely to play.

Introductory remarks:

Katia Glod, Political analyst, former Robert Bosch Research Fellow on the Russia and Eurasia Program, the Royal Institute of International Affairs (Chatham House), London

Moderation:

Dr. Stefan Meister, program officer, Center for Central and Eastern Europe of the Robert Bosch Stiftung, German Council on Foreign Relations, Berlin

The event will be held in English.
