On the 20th anniversary of the “big bang” enlargement of the EU in 2004, our panel reflects on Europe’s past and look into its future. The panel discusses lessons learned by the ten member states admitted then and by Germany. The panel also assesses the next stage of EU enlargement, which includes both Ukraine and “older” candidate countries of the Western Balkans. While Europe’s future and security are closely interlinked with further enlargement, frictions among the current member states are affecting the EU’s internal reform and path to further integration.
