How Should the Eastern Partnership be Adjusted?

Andrian Candu, President of the Parliament of Moldova, nevertheless emphasizes the achievements that have been made in reforming the small country. While admitting that there have been setbacks and difficulties in fighting the deep-rooted corruption, he nevertheless seeks more support from the EU and its member states. At the event, held at the Representation at the European Commission in Berlin, he emphasized the progress the country has made in reforming the economic and public sector and outlined the government’s plans to reform electoral law.
The EU remains dismayed by the current lagging state of reform in Moldova and sees its own scope of action as being severely limited by vested interests inside Moldova, as well as by the geopolitical struggle with Russia. Adriano Martins, the European External Action Service’s Deputy Head of the Division for Eastern Partnership, criticized the current state of reform, particularly with regard to the judicial system. At the same time he emphasized that the EU will support Moldova as it struggles under pressure from Russia.
