Short Bio

Dr. Erin Pobjie is an inaugural British Academy Global Innovation Fellow (Technology & International Affairs) at DGAP where she works in the Center for Climate and Foreign Policy. An expert in international peace and security law, she focuses on emerging threats to global security.
Her recent book, Prohibited Force: The Meaning of “Use of Force” in International Law (Cambridge University Press, 2024), examines key issues in this field. Her current research explores how the UN Security Council can address climate change as a security threat.

In addition to her role at DGAP, Pobjie is an assistant professor at Essex Law School, senior research affiliate at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law, and a non-resident fellow at the UN Institute for Disarmament Research, contributing to their Space Security Program. She has also been a visiting scholar at the Lauterpacht Center for International Law at the University of Cambridge.

Pobjie has presented her research to governments and international institutions, including the UN and International Criminal Court. She serves as co-rapporteur of the International Law Association’s Committee on the Use of Force.

She holds a PhD from the University of Cologne, an LLM from the University of Essex, and an LLB and BA in development studies from the University of Melbourne. Pobjie is also a lawyer and previously practiced commercial law in Australia.
