Professor Achim Wambach has been the president of the ZEW and a professor of economics at the University of Mannheim since April 2016. He was a member of the Monopolies Commission from 2014 to June 2022 and served as its chairman from 2016 to September 2020. From 2018 to 2019 he was co-chair of the Commission “Competition Law 4.0” of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy. He is also a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, which he chaired 2012-2015. From 2015 to 2018 Achim Wambach was a member of the steering committee of the federal government’s National Platform for Electric Mobility (NPE) and from 2017 to 2018 of the Scientific Advisory Board for the Further Development of Risk Structure Compensation Scheme of the Federal Insurance Office.

Achim Wambach obtained a PhD in physics at the University of Oxford and a Master of Science in economics at the London School of Economics. He completed his habilitation thesis in economics at the University of Munich and was professor of economics at the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg before taking on the position of Director of the Institute for Economic Policy (iwp) at the University of Cologne.

His fields of interest include market design and competition policy.
