This policy paper presents the Mexican experience, informed by a roundtable discussion and interviews with a diverse group of 13 experts in electoral issues, political communication, AI and democracy, journalism, fact-checking, and digital citizenship. Eon Institute’s findings in Mexico present a different story to the global narrative, stemming from the country’s unique political and social context. As AI's influence on elections is only beginning to unfold, we stand at a critical juncture. The decisions we make today about how to govern and manage these technologies will determine whether they strengthen or weaken our democracies. Now is the time to monitor how AI is being incorporated in Mexico’s election processes to identify emerging trends and vulnerabilities that could have a significant impact in the future. From there, can be develop effective safeguards to mitigate risks associated with these advancements.
