Ennahda in Practice
Democracy, Gender, and Sharia in Tunisia’s New Constitution
Tunisia’s parliament adopted a milestone new constitution in January 2014. With parliamentary elections approaching on October 26, it is a good time to assess the performance of the largest party in the national assembly: Ennahda. The party has managed to reconcile Islamic values with democratic and pluralistic values – though not with liberal ones. In the Arab world, Ennahda’s abilities to adapt to different political contexts and to compromise in political negotiations are noteworthy.
