The European Elections in May 2019 will mark a crucial vote on the future of Europe as they take place amid numerous internal and external challenges to the European Union. Polls indicate a major shake-up of the party-political landscape. Right-wing populist and euroskeptic forces are on the rise, building an alliance that seeks to undermine the European Union from within. At the same time, Emmanuel Macron’s “La République En Marche!” aims to establish a pan-European liberal-centrist platform which could change the dynamic of coalition-building within the new European Parliament. Moreover, the extension of the Brexit to October means that the United Kingdom will have to formally participate in the European Elections adding further complexity to the future balance of power.

In a Town Hall debate, the future composition of the European Parliament, its impact on the functioning of the EU and the set-up of the new EU leadership will be discussed.
