The Role of NATO’s Allied Maritime Command

NATO’s naval forces play a key role in strengthening the Alliance’s deterrence and defense posture toward the east and the south. They expand NATO’s outreach across the sea in an increasingly challenging environment. Three days before the Brussels summit, we will discuss the importance of maritime capabilities for European security.
NATO’s maritime forces currently enhance capabilities with member and partner navies through joint exercises and port calls. Naval missions are also a central element of NATO-EU cooperation in light of the ongoing migration crisis in the Aegean Sea and off the coast of Libya. At the same time, deterring maritime threats to NATO from the North Atlantic to the Mediterranean remains a top priority. The Allied Maritime Command (MARCOM) in Northwood, UK coordinates these efforts as the command for all NATO maritime forces. Can NATO’s navies provide the necessary assets for the full range of maritime tasks?
