Short Bio
Friedrich Opitz is an associate fellow in DGAP’s Center for Climate and Foreign Policy. He holds a doctoral scholarship from the German Academic Scholarship Foundation and is currently a visiting scholar at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. At the University of Leipzig he conducts comparative research on structural change in East Germany and the Midwest of the United States.
Opitz is also an adjunct lecturer in international and transatlantic relations at the TUD Dresden University of Technology. He heads the Climate, Labor, and Innovation working group of the Industrial Heartlands Fellowship of Das Progressive Zentrum Berlin.
Between 2021 and 2024 Opitz was deputy and program director at the German-American Institute Saxony. He was also a fellow in the 2022/23 program “Social Divisions and Questions of Identity in Germany and the United States” at the American-German Institute in Washington, DC. He has studied in France, the United States, Dresden, and Leipzig.
