Short Bio

Dr. Jonas Bergmann is a policy fellow in DGAP’s Center for Climate and Foreign Policy where he focuses on the climate change-migration nexus. His work centers on the consequences of climate migration, displacement, and relocation, as well as on adaptation, loss and damage, human security, well-being, inequality, and climate justice. He also supports the International Panel on Migration (IPM).

Previously, Bergmann worked with the Climate Migration Council, OECD, World Bank, KNOMAD, Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK), Global Public Policy Institute (GPPi), and German Climate Foundation. He is a co-author of the World Bank’s flagship report Groundswell on internal climate migration. He has published numerous academic and policy-oriented papers and done fieldwork in Latin America and West Africa.

Bergmann conducted his doctoral research at the PIK and Berlin’s Humboldt-Universität, empirically investigating the impacts of climate (im)mobility on well-being and the resulting challenges for policymaking, law, and practice. Previously, he earned a Master of Science in Foreign Service from Georgetown University – specializing in international development, with a certificate on refugees and humanitarian emergencies – and studied international relations in Dresden, Valparaíso, and Lyon. His studies were supported by the Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes, Fulbright Commission, Georgetown University, Erasmus, DAAD, and SDW.
