Distinguished lecturer in Political Science at the American University in Cairo; former member of the Egyptian parliament and of the Shura Council

After the ouster of President Mohamed Morsi on July 3rd, Egyptians are once again struggling to set the course for a more stable, democratic and prosperous future of their country. While supporters of President Morsi continue to protest his removal despite harsh clampdowns of the security forces and a renewed ban of the Muslim Brotherhood, large parts of the population currently seem to be supporting the military-backed interim government and its road map. But will the powerful military eventually permit the establishment of a truly democratic civil state? What are the political ambitions of General Abd al-Fattah as-Sisi? And will there be a way of overcoming the deep polarization of the society and of including the supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood into the political process?

The discussion will be held in English and will be moderated by Paul Freiherr von Maltzahn, Secretary General, DGAP.
