Joint event of USA/Transatlantic Relations Program at the German Council on Foreign Relations and the German Marshall Fund of the United States.

The need for a reliable Transatlantic Alliance has never been stronger. While the United States account for most of NATO’s budget, European partners contribute only a fracture of that amount. There are increasing concerns that the current balance of responsibilities and contributions within the Alliance is neither satisfactory nor sustainable.

What does NATO’s future look like under the pressure of reduced means and more modest ambitions? Are we moving towards a Europe of the “un-able and unwilling”? Is NATO’s central objective - interoperability between U.S. and European forces –at risk? What are the security concerns of the Baltic Sea region within the context of a wider transatlantic security burden sharing? Which critical issues might the NATO crisis management system encounter and what impact does that have on Germany’s and the Baltic region’s security?
