Dr. Constanze Stelzenmüller, Senior Transatlantic Fellow with GMF, will present the findings of this year’s survey, followed by a comment by Ruprecht Polenz, MdB, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the German Bundestag; Dr. Henning Riecke, Head of DGAP’s Transatlantic Relations Program, will moderate the discussion.

Transatlantic Trends, a comprehensive annual survey of the German Marshall Fund of the United States, assesses the overall state of transatlantic relations.  The presentation of the 2012 data builds on information gathered in Transatlantic Trends 2003-2011. Russia was included in the survey for the first time, extending the number of countries covered to 15. This year’s survey focuses in particular on:

  • the upcoming U.S. presidential election and the different perceptions of the two candidates in Europe and the United States
  • consequences of the Eurocrisis on domestic issues and confidence in international economic governance
  • opinions about the crisis in Syria and possible international responses
  • comparisons in perceptions concerning Western involvement in Libya, Afghanistan and Iraq
  • Russian attitudes towards domestic institutions as well as current international affairs

Transatlantic Trends is a project of the German Marshall Fund of the United States and the Compagnia di San Paolo, with additional support from the Fundação Luso-Americana, Fundación BBVA, the Communitas Foundation, the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs, and the Open Society Foundations. Polling was conducted in the United States, twelve EU member states, Turkey, and Russia, in June 2012.
