The first round of presidential and parliamentary elections in Turkey has been scheduled for May 14, 2023. Demoscopes predicted a close race, especially with regard to the presidency. After more than 20 years in power, President Erdoğan could actually be voted out of office. Even if he is able to hold on to power, there is a high probability that his de facto coalition of AKP and ultranationalist MHP will lose its majority in parliament. International observers in particular are skeptical that President Erdoğan will actually step down after many years in power. While many Turks have little doubt about this, it remains unclear how a transfer of power would proceed.
