Every Thursday morning, DGAP’s Research Institute brings together experts and high-level guests to discuss the latest developments in foreign affairs. This week, we will look at the dangers that transnational disinformation campaigns hold for our democracy. Fake news are nothing new. Yet both the quality and volume of systematic disinformation have reached new heights, especially as tools based on artificial intelligence (AI) have become more widely available. Competition from online sources is putting traditional media outlets under increasing pressure. Authoritarian regimes are amplifying disinformation and running highly efficient influencer campaigns to target the vital institutions of liberal democracy. Together with our guests, we will discuss the challenges – and opportunities – that new technologies present to international political discourse, especially in a key year in which more than 70 elections will be held worldwide.
