Transatlantic Speaker Series
The tripartite relations between the US, the EU and Russia are facing a multitude of global challenges while at the same time their leadership is weak. Russia’s Putin faces increased public unrest and demands from civil society actors. Obama’s second term will likely be shaped by the huge financial debt crisis and the re-nationalization of US policy. At the same time, the EU is preoccupied with its Eurozone crisis. What is the outlook under these circumstances on topics such as NATO’s missile defense shield and Europe’s dependency on Russian Oil and Gas? Will Putin be able to further integrate Russia into the international trade system under his terms? Will the EU try to approach Russia on human rights concerns in the near future? And will the triangle finally agree on a common strategy towards Syria and a possible international engagement?
