Every Thursday morning, DGAP’s Research Institute brings together experts and high-level guests to discuss the latest developments in foreign affairs. This week, on the 20th anniversary of the “big bang” enlargement of the EU in 2004, we will reflect on Europe’s past and look into its future. We will discuss lessons learned by the ten member states admitted then and by Germany. We will also assess the next stage of EU enlargement, which includes both Ukraine and “older” candidate countries of the Western Balkans. While Europe’s future and security are closely interlinked with further enlargement, frictions among the current member states are affecting the EU’s internal reform and path to further integration.
