Participants also presented their own papers in a series of working groups. In addition to analyzing the situations in the different North African countries, participants identified and discussed questions of relevance to the entire region.  These included: What role should the state play in regulating the media and ensuring high-quality reporting? How can effective self-regulating mechanisms be implemented in the media? What reforms are needed in the areas of journalists’ education and citizen journalism? What are the opportunities for new media, what are the impediments, and how can online activism translate into on-the-ground effects? Finally, the perspective of the European and international media on the developments in the southern Mediterranean was analyzed critically.

The conference was organized in close cooperation with the Robert Bosch Stiftung, the German Federal Foreign Office, the Institute for Foreign Cultural Relations (ifa), and the Centre Jaques Berque in Rabat.
