Petra Dolata, Canada Research Chair in the History of Energy and associate professor at the University of Calgary’s department of history addressed the DGAP’s Discussion Group on Transatlantic Relations on November 26 and described Canada’s position on the Arctic Council.

Canada is a strong supporter of the Arctic Council, which it sees as fostering circumpolar governance and economic development in the region. However, it is still in dispute over territorial claims with other countries neighboring the Artic and is at odds with other stakeholders over resource developments. Petra Dolata outlined how Canada’s Arctic policy fit into the larger picture of transatlantic relations and touched on possible roles that the could EU play in the Arctic.

Helga Haftendorn of the Freie Universität Berlin’s Otto Suhr Institute for Political Science responded to the address. The ensuing discussion was chaired by former Bundestag member and Transatlantic expert Karsten D. Voigt. Click here to read the full report in German.
