Russia, and Central Asia Russian actors have entered close ties with Western far-right activists, publicists, ideologues, and politicians in recent years. At the same time, their interest in doing so has shifted over time: At first, the Russian establishment mostly used the Western far right to legitimize Moscow’s politics and actions domestically and internationally. More recently, however, Moscow has been supporting far-right political forces to influence European politics and undermine the liberal-democratic consensus in Europe and the world. Meanwhile, far-right forces are also using their ties with Moscow for domestic purposes to demonstrate their legitimacy as representatives of the “alternative mainstream”. In his book presentation, Anton Shekhovtsov will discuss his main findings on this growing relationship. Anton Shekhovtsov is the author of New Radical Right-Wing Parties in European Democracies (published in Russian, ibidem -Verlag, 2011) and Russia and the Western Far Right (Routledge, 2017). He co-edited The Post-War Anglo-American Far Right (Palgrave, 2014) and White Power Music (Ilford, 2012). He is a member of the Editorial Board of Fascism: Journal of Comparative Fascist Studies, and has contributed articles, amongst others, to Journal of Democracy , Russian Politics and Law , Europe-Asia Studies , and Patterns of Prejudice. The event will be held in English.
